(Continued from New Mexico Wild Bunch,
Cowboy Fast Draw Club)
At present,
there are three shooting organizations representing the gunfighters of the Old
West; one is the WORLD FAST DRAW ASSOC. and the other is the SINGLE ACTION
SHOOTING SOCIETY. The W.F.D.A. is based upon speed shooting using modified
single action guns. S.A.S.S. is based upon more traditional shooting stages
emphasizing accuracy more than speed. There is a growing void between the two
associations, which neither wants to fill. One wants to put all the emphasis on
speed and the other wants to remain laid back and shoot more for fun and
camaraderie.
The W.F.D.A. has
made it clear that they do not want anything to do with cowboy shooting, and
S.A.S.S. will have nothing to do with fast-draw. The W.F.D.A. wants to use race
guns and metal-lined holsters and yet call it traditionalism. S.A.S.S. does not
want to draw fast because they feel that is unsafe and not traditional. Then
there is THE COWBOY FAST DRAW ASSOC.
who is trying to fill the void between the two organizations. I belong to all
three of these shooting clubs. I have to say that all three have something to
offer the weekend warrior in the form of recreational shooting. As the creator
of the WILD BUNCH fast draw club I favor the "COWBOY FAST DRAW" creed and will
follow their shooting rules as a guideline for our club.

We want to remain traditional in dress and style, yet want a more competitive playing field. The purpose of the NEW MEXICO WILD BUNCH is to provide a new form of traditional fast-draw to fill this void. To really re-enact the period, to be called traditionalists, we must not only use period clothing and gear, but also stand, draw and shoot with as much realism as possible. There are many shooters who like to compete but feel they are not fast enough for fast-draw. Some prefer a more traditional form of fast- draw, where not all the emphasis is on speed.
Not everyone is a speed shooter, but everyone can be competitive on an even playing field. Going back to the true traditional holsters and guns, putting more emphasis on accuracy rather than speed, and making the targets smaller, also helps. One-on-one is the true way to test your skills against the other man or woman. Anyone can stand up and shoot at a stationary target, hit or miss, but many find that boring. How can we call ourselves gunfighters if we cannot stand up "MONO y MONO" and shoot it out? That is the extreme adrenalin rush. It's not for everyone, but then, not everyone is a gun fighter!
